Millennia Atlantic University

Associate of Science - Legal Assisting

As an assistant to an attorney, the legal assistant researches legal precedent, prepares legal documents, and investigates the facts. Research is conducted in support of a legal proceeding, to initiate legal action, or to develop a defense. Legal Assistants are not attorneys but they are qualified as a result of education and training to work in a law office, private and government offices, and corporations. The state of Florida regulates the practice of law but does not require a licensing procedure or certification for legal assistants. A graduate of an associate’s degree in legal studies from an approved program, plus a minimum of 2 years of work experience may become a Registered Paralegal/Legal Assistant in Florida.

Furthermore, although it is not a requirement for work as a legal assistant, a graduate may seek national certification by passing an exam called the Certified Legal Assisting Exam that is administered by the National Association of Legal Assistants.

The AS degree program offered by Millennia Atlantic University (MAU) provides a general education component but the majority of the 60 credit hours is devoted to business and legal courses. All courses are required to graduate. Graduates of the Legal Assisting program may transfer to the Paralegal Bachelor of Science degree offered by MAU.
