The course provides introduction to the applicable legal framework of basic aspects of the law of the sea. It emphasizes introducing the framework of the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention (LOSC), especially considering delimitation of ocean areas, and on explaining the most important rights and duties of coastal states and other states in those areas.
Learning outcomes At the end of the course, students will:
- be able to distinguish between true and false statements regarding how ocean- and ocean floor areas of different kinds are being delimited according to the law of the sea.
- be able to identify the rights and duties of coastal states and other states in different ocean- and ocean floor areas.
- be able to identify the basic aspects of 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC), especially its provisions on the utilization of marine resources, navigation and other relevant topics.
