This is a well-established and highly-successful programme which combines the opportunity to acquire real depth of knowledge about French law with a qualifying English law degree.
- Gives you a through grounding in two distinct legal systems and legal cultures - you study critical aspects of French law through the two years at Kent before your year abroad
- Offers a choice of partner universities for you to study at in your year abroad (your third year). You can spend your year abroad at universities in Grenoble, Bordeaux or Paris (where we have agreements with both Paris I [Pantheon-Sorbonne] and Paris X [Nanterre]).
The first year of the programme is carefully designed to give a grounding for your later studies in both English and French law. You take these modules:
- Public Law I*
- Droit Constitutionnel et Administratif (an introduction to French public law)
- A Critical Introduction to Law
- French Post A Level
The second year builds towards your year abroad as well as towards your English qualifying law degree. Students usually take four modules, and these would usually be a combination of exemption modules required for professional qualification and modules with a distinct focus on French and European law.
A typical combination would be: Droit civil (an introduction to French tort and contract law), European Union Law, Public Law II, European Legal Systems, Introductions to Obligations, Foundations of Property.
In your year abroad, you take modules amounting to half the level of workload of your years spent at Kent. Different detailed agreements on the range of modules available are made with each partner university.
In their final year, students again choose four modules (or the equivalent). Most students will want to complete their exemption modules, and there is still some scope to explore other areas of interest from the wide range of optional modules offered at Kent.
A typical combination would be: Land Law, Equity and Trusts, The Law of Obligations, Criminal Law, one full credit optional module.
