Program Description

LLB European Legal Studies

University of Kent, Kent Law School

Canterbury Campus

The European Legal Studies degree gives you the opportunity to obtain an LLB and spend a year at one of our partner universities in Europe where you are taught entirely in English.

This course gives you valuable added depth and a European dimension to your degree, as well as offering an unforgettable experience in another country, without any requirement to learn another language.

Students on the European Legal Studies degree spend their first two years at Kent, their third year at one of our European partner universities, and the fourth back at Kent.

The year in Europe is currently available in the following countries:

  • Netherlands (Maastricht and Groningen)
  • Denmark (Copenhagen)
  • Norway (Bergen)
  • Sweden (Uppsala)
  • Finland (Turku)
  • Czech Republic (Prague)
  • Austria (Vienna)
  • France (Grenoble)

Standard Entry Requirements

  • A levels: AAB (AAA for M104)
  • International Baccalaureate: IB Diploma with 33 points overall, or 17 points at Higher level
  • BTEC Diploma: Distinction, Distinction, Distinction

We are also pleased to welcome applicants with a variety of international and domestic qualifications – please contact us for more information.

We also offer a 'senior status', two year LLB for non-law graduates, and generally require applicants to the programme to have a good first degree at B-/2.1 level or above – please contact us for more information.

Year One

Students in their first year take exactly the same modules as students on the single honours LLB in Law:

  • A Critical Introduction to Law
  • Public Law I*
  • Criminal Law*
  • Foundations of Property*
  • Introduction to Obligations*

Year Two

In year two, European Legal Studies students choose from the same range of modules available to single honours LLB Law students. In preparation for the year abroad, it is recommend that students take at least two of the following modules:

  • European Legal Systems
  • European Comparative Law
  • International Law
  • Human Rights and English Law

A typical combination would be: Public Law II, European Union Law, The Law of Obligations*, plus 60 credits from the above.

Year Three

Students normally take the equivalent of 120 Kent credits worth of modules during their year abroad (which is 60 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits under the EU's ERASMUS arrangements). Accordingly, students are required to undertake the equivalent amount of studies during their year abroad as at Kent. The majority of modules taken during the year abroad should be law modules. The year abroad is assessed on a pass/fail basis and marks obtained during the year abroad aren't used in the calculation of the final degree classification.

Year Four

Students return to Kent to finish their degree and choose from the wide range of modules offered at Kent Law School.

A typical combination would be Land Law and Equity and Trusts, leaving 90 credits of optional modules.
