Cardiff Law School is home to a vibrant postgraduate student body. We cater for diversity of interest, background and aspiration, for students from the UK and overseas, with a flexible programme offering opportunities for full and part-time study.

Law occupies a substantial building on the Cathays Park campus, close to the law courts, barristers’ chambers, major law firms and the city centre. There is a dedicated Graduate Law Building opposite the Law School building where much of the LLM teaching takes place.

Through our LLM programme you can benefit from:

  • the expertise and experience of our teaching staff
  • flexibility and choice from a wide range of modules
  • dedicated pastoral support through our personal tutor scheme
  • the latest e-learning facilities, accessible from anywhere
  • the opportunity to experience law in action through
  • our Pro Bono Scheme and Innocence Project
  • a tailor-made skills training programme
  • where a need is identified, writing skills support for students whose first language is not English
  • Personal Development Planning to evaluate your progress

We offer a broadly based postgraduate taught LLM programme leading to the award of the degree of Master of Laws (LLM). Students can choose to pursue an LLM that specialises in one of the several programmes listed above or, if they prefer, can pursue non-specialised legal study choosing from any of the available modules.

Programme structure

The LLM programme comprises two stages. In Stage 1 students normally pursue four modules from the list approved for each route. Some of these are compulsory.

All students enroled for the LLM will also undertake training in Postgraduate Research Skills and Support. Completion of the LLM programme meets the Continuing Professional Development yearly requirement of the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board.

Teaching and Learning

For all programmes, students are encouraged to work independently to seek out legal materials for themselves, to read and analyse these materials critically and to present structured and reasoned argument under the guidance of their tutors and supervisors.

Although there are some lectures in several of the programmes, teaching is mainly carried out through seminars. Students will be required to read materials relevant to each module in advance of the teaching sessions, and to present the results of their reading.

The majority of modules are assessed through an essay or another approved method. In addition, students will complete formative (non-assessed) work on which they will be given feedback.

Postgraduate Awards

Students who successfully complete Stages 1 and 2 of the LLM programme will be eligible for the award of the degree of Master of Laws with, for those who have followed one of the specialised programmes, the name of that programme included in the title of the award. For both Stages of the programme the pass mark is 50%. Students who obtain an average mark of 70% or above will be eligible for the award of the degree with Distinction.

Students who successfully complete Stage 1 (120 credits of study) but who do not proceed to or complete Stage 2 of the programme, may be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma as appropriate to their chosen programme.

Students who successfully complete 60 credits of study but who do not otherwise complete Stage 1 of the programme, may be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Certificate as appropriate to their chosen programme.
