We have an exciting new program that will interest a number of you who would like to improve your English language skills as you embark on studying for your LL.M. degree here at the University of San Francisco School of Law.

The LLM and English Language Program here at USF is program of study for students conditionally-admitted to the USF School of Law. This program is designed to help students achieve the level of proficiency in English necessary to be successful in the LLM degree program. Depending on submitted standardized scores of English proficiency, conditionally-admitted students may be required to take one or two semesters of English language development coursework in the Academic English for Multilingual Students Program (AEM) at USF.

Requirements for Participation

Two semesters (Fall 2014-Spring 2015)

  • iBT 70
  • IELTS 6.0

One Semester (Spring 2015)

  • iBT 80
  • IELTS 6.5

Course of Study in AEM

  • Graduate Writing and Speaking Practicum (4 credits)
  • Academic Reading and Writing II (8 credits)

Course of Study in AEM

  • Legal English (4 credits)
  • Academic Reading and Writing III (8)

Or

  • Academic Oral
  • Communication II (4 credits)
  • And an Elective (4 credits)

Students who need additional English language development after the ELP is completed are able to continue English language development courses in the summer prior to the start of the LLM program in the Intensive English Program at USF.

Students in this program are welcome and strongly encouraged to participate in all co-curricular activities of the LLM Program at USF such as visits to courts and other related events through the American Legal Systems class, participation in professional development events, and social activities organized at the law school.

Students will receive credit towards their LLM degree for the Legal English class. They will also receive a Certificate at the completion of the program.
