Case Western Reserve University School of Law

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Business Law is designed to give graduates of law schools outside the United States an opportunity to study U.S. business law as applied to international transactions.

The program prepares students for positions in international law firms, in-house legal departments of multinational corporations, government posts and other for-profit and non-profit organizations doing business internationally.

The one-year program requires full-time attendance and 24 hours of course credits.

  • Foreign Graduate Seminar (1, fall) + (1, spring)

During the Foreign Graduate Seminar, students working toward the specialized LL.M. degree in International Business Law must receive a grade of H on the research paper, required in the second semester, on an international business law topic. The grade of H is equivalent to a B+ or better. Students who receive a grade of S on the research paper receive an LL.M. in U.S. and Global Legal Studies and a certificate in International Business Law.

In addition to the required classes above, students pursuing the LL.M. in International Business Law must complete an additional 12 credits from the list of elective classes below. Students must choose one elective from Group I; other electives may be from either Group I or Group II

NOTE: Course offerings may change from year to year and other international business elective courses may qualify for the LL.M. in International Business Law at the discretion of the Director of Foreign Graduate Legal Studies.


Candidates must have a foreign university level degree in law and a TOEFL score of 90 or IELTS of 6.5. Candidates whose TOEFL or IELTS scores do not meet the criteria, but otherwise have excellent academic and professional credentials, may be granted conditional admission with additional English language study, at ELS Cleveland located on the CWRU campus and/or completion of our Summer Language and Law Institute. Candidates with a foreign or U.S. first degree in business and business experience are also welcome to apply.
