This Paralegal Diploma Program is suitable for those without secretarial training who are looking for an exciting career in the legal field. Paralegals, also know as Legal Assistants are well-paid and highly sought after. This program is intensive and it covers both the office administration skills and the knowledge base required to work in the legal profession. As a Paralegal, the graduate is an indispensable member of the law office team and this program provides all the training necessary to be successful in this role.

Program Objectives

This program provides students with advanced keyboarding, transcription and computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook) and trains students in the vital areas of business communication, customer service and employment. Legal subject areas include understanding the Canadian legal system, the court structure, legal rights, procedures and practices in a modern legal office, wills and estates, real estate and conveyancing, corporate and commercial law, civil litigation, family law, criminal law and evidence, business law, torts, contracts, insurance law, cash and collection procedures, legal research and interviewing and intellectual property law.

Career Opportunities

This program prepares graduates to work in small or large law firms, in legal departments of law corporations or with government agencies. Other employment opportunities include real estate, trust companies, and financial institutions.

Admissions Prerequisites


Standard Admission


Students must sign a Practicum Waiver Form as acknowledgement of the Practicum Requirement of a 50 WPM typing speed.

Students must meet ONE of the following criteria:

  • Alberta high school diploma, verified by transcript, with 50% or better in Grade 12 English and Grade 10 Mathematics, or non-Alberta equivalent.

OR

  • Successful completion of the General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) with a standard score of 450 or better in English and Mathematics.

Alberta Mature Admission


Students must sign a Practicum Waiver Form as acknowledgement of the Practicum Requirement of a 50 WPM typing speed.


Students must meet ALL of the following criteria:
•Out of school for two years;
•Be at least eighteen years of age prior to admission;
•Applicants must successfully pass the Reeves College Admissions Test;
•Thirty-three credits towards an Alberta high school diploma, verified by transcript, with 50% or better in Grade 10 English and in Grade 10 Mathematics, or non-Alberta equivalent.


Saskatchewan Mature Admission


•Students must have at least 8 credits towards a high school diploma with a 50% or better in Grade 10 Math and Grade 10 English.
