In 2013 we will offer a new graduate law degree, the Juris Doctor, which replaces the Bachelor of Laws degree as the pathway to admission to legal practice. We also offer postgraduate and researchopportunities and continuing professional development activities.

It is provided primarily for those people who have fulfilled the requirements of an undergraduate law degree and been admitted to practice, usually in another country, and have been advised by the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia to undertake extra units of study in order to be admitted to practice in this State.The Legal Practice Board of Western Australia will instruct you regarding which areas of law you need to complete to satisfy admission requirements. The Juris Doctor is a three year postgraduate degree by coursework involving the completion of 24 units (8 per full time year) comprising a combination of cumpulsory and option units. The UWA JD is highly regarded and readily recognised, both nationally and internationally. Successful completion of the JD will lead to accreditation as a lawyer. Why choose the Juris Doctor at UWA? The Juris Doctor provides a challenging and focussed environment for postgraduate studies in law. Students enrolled in the JD are able to choose from a broad selection of law option units. Law graduates have a diverse range of career destinations including professional legal practice, academia, private consultancies or non-government organisations, the private sector including; banks and financial institutions, accountancy firms, large resource companies, state or federal government departments or instrumentalities and trade unions. Course Delivery The Juris Doctor is an on campus program. Whilst some lectures may be recorded, the Law School does not promote correspondence learning. The Law Faculty promotes a ‘face to face’, interactive learning environment with participation marks included in many of the units assessment structures. Applicants to the UWA JD must hold an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than law, or a law degree from a different legal system. Selection Criteria The criteria for selection in to the UWA JD are: - a UWA bachelor's degree or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty; and - a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 5.5 (out of 7.0), or equivalent, across all completed tertiary studies; and - a Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) score from an LSAT test taken within 5 years prior to applying for admission Applications will be ranked based upon the GPA and LSAT score, weighted equally. Admission will be awarded to the highest ranked applicants who fall within the intake quota for that year. Applications for admission to the Juris Doctor in 2015 will open in August 2014. Applications will only be accepted via the online application system and further information will be available closer to the date. Fees The Juris Doctor is fully Commonwealth Supported.
