The Ecole Supérieure de Journalisme de Paris was created in Paris in the period from 1896 to 1899 by university professors willing to expand education in the social sciences. It holds the distinction as the first school of journalism ever created in the world. ESJ Paris was selected in 2008 as partner school of journalism for various external programs, such as the NATO civil training program in Central Asia and the European Community Lorenzo Natali Journalism Prize. The … [+] nearly 130 teachers are full-time journalists and professionals: lawyers, senior civil servants, university lecturers. In 2008 ESJ D International created a joint-venture with ESJ in Casablanca (now in Rabat) which offers the the same curriculum and program as ESJ Paris. The ESJ Paris program includes the basics of journalism, media management, written press, deontology and ethics, journalism law, TV, radio broadcasting, photography, web, career strategy, professional software, investigative reporting, foreign correspondence, and technical English. ESJ Paris Formation is a professional training subsidiary incorporated in 2009 to provide short-session training programs to professionals (medias outlets and general businesses). ESJ D International opened a branch in Dubai (UAE) in 2010, named ORIENT-ESJ, where the training centers on TV broadcasting and is taught in English and Arabic. ESJ Paris curricula Currently, general teaching is 80% in French and 20% in English – plus Arabic in Casablanca. Main body (master 1): - Two years of specific journalism training - Admission at +2/+3 level post high school with a limited number of positions - One-year internal prep school for +1/+0 levels post high school - Training focuses on graduating polyvalent journalists (press, TV, radio, Internet) but also includes training in photography, investigative reporting, media laws, and other topics - English is a mandatory part of the training - A selection process enforces that only students who maintain a certain level can continue the program - Graduation is a master, level I (« Bologna » system) - Training includes annually 1500 hours, which includes 500 h of lectures and workshops plus mandatory internships within a media organization (2 periods of 2 months each year). Specific training programs (master 2): Master 2 is a very limited group of students in a dual intensive program in journalism for 15 months, having been selected after another graduation (1700 hours of training), plus mandatory media internship of 3 months. Options are: general journalism, sports journalism, audio-visual/TV journalist and reporter, bilingual journalist. Coherence with the “Bologna” system ESJ brings together various graduation systems : French “classical”: ESJ is a “grande école”, by decree of the Prime Minister, meaning that graduating students get a ”Diplôme de Formation Supérieure en Journalisme”, M1 level. “Certification of ESJ” through the RNCP (both Ministries of Education and Labor) means also that students graduate in the L3/M1 range. “LMD/Bologna”: we deliver 60 ECTS each year to students with the main cursus and 20 ECTS through an additional non-mandatory cursus in order to deliver a 240 ECTS/M1 level at graduation, whatever the level of student prior to joining ESJ. Program year: ESJ 1: (L1, prep year): 90 to 100 ESJ 2 (L2): 70 to 80 ESJ 3 (M1): 60 to 70 (20 per specialization: TV, radio or print) ESJ 4 (M2) general: 20 ESJ 4 (M2) sports: 20 ESJ 4 (M2) TV/Broadcast: 9 ESJ Paris includes around 25% foreign students from all over the world: (Belgium, Romania, Qatar, Canada, Algeria, Lebanon, India, Argentina, Japan, Tunisia, Comores, Portugal, the UK, Spain, Holland, Morocco, Gabon, Mali, Senegal, Russia, Egypt, Djibouti, Switzerland, Italy, as noted in 2009 - 2010). International programs ESJ Paris has a prep class in both Casablanca (Morocco) and Brussels (Belgium). Opening of a class in Geneva (Switzerland) is scheduled for 2010. Exchange programs are currently running with the following schools of journalism: Griffith College (Dublin, Ireland), American University (Washington, DC, USA), Lomonossov University of Moscow (Russia), University of Geneva (Switzerland), San Pablo CEU (Madrid, Spain), University of Sofia (Bulgaria), John Cabot University (Roma, Italy) Discussions are underway to set up exchange programs in India, China, Taiwan, Argentina and Turkey.

Flexibility - Choice - Guidance In VUB's eight faculties, students can choose to study and explore beyond their own discipline. VUB offers a full range of Bachelor and Master courses, many of which are taught in English. The key concept in this range of courses is flexibility. The system of majors and minors enables students to plan their studies in a way that best meets their interests. Some of the courses are designed as evening classes, therefore catering to students and professionals alike. Being a middle sized university has its advantages. First of all, it allows frequent personal contact between students, teachers and teaching assistants. Students are given the opportunity to ask their questions directly to their professors both in class and outside class. This is part of a real direct-contact culture that is well embedded within the university. Additionally, students are strongly encouraged to interact with each other through group assignments within the curriculum and through the various extracurricular activities. VUB alumni are therefore excellent critical thinkers and articulate persons able to network and function remarkably well in society. All degree programmes offered by the VUB are accredited by the Dutch Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO) ensuringthat they meet predefined quality standards. A university in the heart of Europe VUB offers students more than just a great educational experience. Brussels, the heart of Europe and the capital of Belgium is an open invitation to exploring a truly international city. Brussels is the centre of international politics and business. The Centre international de formation européenne (CIFE) was created in 1954. Its founders, in particular Alexandre Marc, understood the urgent necessity to train professionals and citizens in the subject of a united Europe. CIFE is a private non-profit-making international organisation which includes several European studies courses as well as conferences, seminars and publications. The programmes of the Centre international de formation européenne (CIFE) encompass ed… [+] ucational and research activities concerning European integration, federalism, regionalism and changes within the structures of contemporary society in accordance with a federalist prospective. CIFE receives the support of the European Union and other international organisations, of numerous national governments as well as regional and local authorities, foundations, and private contributors. Over the course of the years, CIFE has become an organisation without rival. We offer postgraduate university courses; summer university programmes; general education by means of seminars and international apprenticeships; the furthering of knowledge and debate in conferences; the transmission of information and communication by means of our review L’Europe en formation and our various other publications. This abundant activity has been nurtured over the course of the successive EU enlargements and has often anticipated these. In this way, as early as the end of the 1980s, CIFE multiplied its conferences and summer sessions from Prague to Moscow, from Vilnius to Budapest and then on to Sofia, and trained in its institute in Nice numerous students who have gone on to become today’s professionals in a new Europe. Finally, CIFE has opened itself to the challenges new Europe has presented by complementing the natural openness which Nice offers towards Western Europe and the Mediterranean with the openness in Berlin towards Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea and the openness in Istanbul towards Turkey and beyond. The culmination of our activities has been made possible thanks to the support of local, regional and national authorities, business and foundations, the largest of international organisations but most of all thanks to the confidence that leaders of the European Communities have placed in CIFE from the very beginning and which the EU has continually and resolutely supported. This unparalleled assessment of service to a peaceful, prosperous and more just Europe owes much to CIFE’s presidents: Étienne Hirsh, Jean Rey, Gaston Thorn, Lord Thomson, Émile Noël, Michel Albert… It also owes much to those who have been Directors, Alexandre Marc then Ferdinand Kinsky and all their collaborators, expert as much as loyal, to their objective.

Faculty members are drawn from around the world, are highly qualified in their field(s) of expertise and combine a solid academic background and ample professional experience as business leaders, industrialists, entrepreneurs and/or consultants. To prevent business theory from remaining abstract and inapplicable, most courses are based on the case method and provide students with a practical, hands-on problem-solving approach to contemporary business and management issues. Students are taught in a pragmatic way with the use of simulation techniques, up-to-date case studies and the required theoretical background. They also learn to think strategically when making decisions, to empathize with their peers, to inspire team work and team building, and to contribute to the success of a project. Thinking creatively and independently by questioning, rather than blindly accepting subject material is strongly encouraged. Throughout the academic year, students are regularly assessed through an ideal mix of individual and team projects, presentations, papers, mid-terms and final exams so that their progress can be closely monitored. This highly practical skills and knowledge based approach to learning involves the continuing monitoring and adaptation of courses to the demands of the global marketplace with the assistance of an Academic Council composed of prominent personalities from the business community.

Welcome to the Université libre de Bruxelles! BRUSSELS, A CITY ON HUMAN SCALE In the heart of Europe, just 1h20 by train from Paris, 1h30 from Amsterdam, and 1h50 from London and Cologne, Brussels offers all the advantages of a capital city and the quality of life of a large and lively town. Brussels is home to all the major European institutions. It is the official seat of the EU and many other political and economic decision-making entities, and boasts a growing … [+] number of businesses, organisations and international experts. The long tradition of hospitality and exchange in Europe's greenest capital means visitors and residents alike can enjoy a broad mix of world food and music, while culture vultures can choose from a host of museums and shows. Located in the heart of the city, the Université libre de Bruxelles or ULB also offers many cultural, festive and sports activities. The university campuses and surrounding areas are extremely attractive, providing just the right mix between study and leisure. MULTICULTURAL AND INTERNATIONAL As a multicultural university with one third of students and researchers from abroad, international relations is a daily reality for the Université libre de Bruxelles, just like the city of Brussels itself, one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. Collaboration with universities from around the world has been stepped up in both education and research, thanks in large part to the various European mobility programmes. In addition to student mobility programmes, the University offers diverse integrated programmes with foreign partners, including joint Master and doctoral degrees. Several of these programmes have received the prestigious Erasmus Mundus accreditation. Its outward-looking position with regard to Europe and the world has resulted in a number of agreements, collaborations and special partnerships being set up with some of the world's top universities. With many years of experience on the international stage, the University launched UNICA, a network of 45 leading European universities that encompasses over a million students. It is also a founding member of the International Forum of Public Universities (IFPU). The institution's internationalisation is anchored by the following: Cross-border cooperation with the Nord-Pas-de-Calais (Lille) region of France A policy of preferred partners to build joint, long-term, activities with about ten institutions (notably Oxford, Paris VI, Berkeley, Montreal, UBC in Vancouver, Fudan in Shanghai) Several specialised institutions and centres including the Institut d'études européennes (Jean Monnet research pole), the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management, the School for Public Health, the Centre for Canadian Studies, Czech Studies, etc. A transatlantic dialogue and opening to emerging countries Over the years, and despite limited resources, ULB has been able to sustain its level of excellence and meet its public and social responsibilities. The University believes that it can help in the creation of a more just and democratic world by contributing a relationship of trust, a critical dimension and the impartiality required in a globalised world. GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH Four scientific Nobel Prizes, one Fields Medal, three Wolf Prizes and two Marie Curie Prizes are further evidence of the University's longstanding tradition of excellence. The Université libre de Bruxelles is an active member of the Research Area and is involved in almost 130 projects financed by the 7th European Framework Programmes. Over the past few years, it has obtained 7 starting Grants from the European Research Area (ERC) to finance research in Medicine, Economics, Mathematics, Sociology, or Political Science, as well as 2 Advanced Grant in Artificial Intelligence and Physics. In addition, the University's Institute for European Studies is recognized as a “Jean Monnet European research centre” for its work on European integration. HIGH TEACHING STANDARDS The Université libre de Bruxelles has 13 faculties, schools and specialized institutes that cover all the disciplines, closely combining academic input and research. It offers almost 40 undergraduate programmes and 235 graduate programmes. It also partners 20 Doctoral schools, with almost 1,600 PhD in progress. Some of our Master programmes focus on transdisciplinarity, whilst others place more emphasis on international relations through European Masters degrees, or on multilingualism. We have also been working in close collaboration with the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel - Brussels Flemish-speaking university) for a number of years. In the field of health, in addition to the Erasme teaching hospital, the University works closely with an extensive network of hospitals around Belgium. One of the University's main aims is to give its students a solid foundation in critical thinking as well as a taste for research, while at the same time catering to the needs of new publics. Executive education programmes and courses with specially adapted hours for working professionals are offered alongside more traditional programmes and courses involving cutting-edge research. Humanism, individual responsibility... "The Université libre de Bruxelles bases its teaching and research on the principle of free inquiry. This postulates, in all domains, independence of judgement and the rejection of an authority-based conception of knowledge." (1st article of the statutes of ULB). One specific feature of ULB's teaching is to offer students their personal freedom while also providing them with the necessary support. It is up to the students themselves to take advantage of the opportunities and the numerous forms of support which are available to them : the University is thus a school of responsibility. ... and innovation The most striking innovations have been introduced at postgraduate level. These programmes, some of which are taught during the evening and on weekends, are aimed in particular at working adults, and are based either on newly emerging social and economic needs (euromarketing, corporate governance, etc), or on advanced research (aesthetics and the philosophy of art, the philosophy of science, bioinformatics, etc). New and innovatory courses of this nature build themselves on ULB's long-standing tradition of ULB while developing it further in new directions. A FOCUS ON LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY As a French-speaking university, most of the courses at the Université libre de Bruxelles are delivered in French. However, a growing number of Master degrees are partly or entirely delivered in English. The University offers a wide range of French courses, prior to and during the academic year, to help its international students improve their language skills. A COMMITTED UNIVERSITY The Université libre de Bruxelles is determined to give everyone the chance to continue their higher education studies and has developed a range of student support initiatives: e.g., financial and psychological support, guidance, French classes, etc. The University also provides off-campus academic support. One notable example is a support programme for underachieving secondary school pupils (Schola) which was awarded the UNESCO Comenius prize. Since its foundation in 1834, the Université libre de Bruxelles has been closely involved in the ongoing debate on critical thinking and freedom. This has included outspoken opposition to dictatorships and other nationalist abuses, the promotion of equal opportunities and a raft of other social issues. After founding one of the first NGOs (CEMUBAC), the University has continued to play an active role in development aid and international cooperation. European and international, welcoming and independent, committed and dynamic, the Université libre de Bruxelles can also count on its vast global alumni network (UAE), the University's best ambassadors. Based on the principle of free enquiry that postulates independent reasoning and the rejection of all dogma, the University has retained its original ideals as a free institution that is firmly engaged in the defence of democratic and human values. Freedom of inquiry and participation The Université libre de Bruxelles bases its teaching and research on the principle of free inquiry and has always given its students the possibility of playing an active and participatory role in University life and in the evaluation of the teaching they receive. Indeed the principle of free inquiry, which is founded on independent judgement and a rejection of an authority-based view of knowledge, is enshrined in the University's statutes. As a result, ULB is one of the few Belgian, or even European universities where students are represented on all decision-making bodies. In the same spirit, a systematic teacher assessment procedure has been in operation for over twenty years, and is based on students' own assessment of their teachers' pedagogical abilities.

Although some courses at the ULB's Faculty of Law were already being taught in Dutch in 1935, it was not until 1963 that almost all the fa… [+] culties offered courses in Dutch. The Dutch-speaking university was finally split off from its French-speaking counterpart on 1 October 1969. With the act of 28 May 1970, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles officially became two separate legal, administrative and scientific entities. Brussels Faculty of Engineering (in short "Bruface") is powered by the two universities in the centre of Brussels. Starting from the academic year 2011-2012 Université Libre de Bruxelles and Vrije Universiteit Brussel jointly organise fully English taught Master of Science programmes in Engineering. The Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) are both active in several international higher education networks including T.I.M.E. and UNICA. Since their creation, our both universities have kept the flame of freedom burning and have always defended the major issues of democracy, individual freedoms and the respect for human rights.

The LLM programme itself has no funding available for scholarships to support the cost of living in Ghent. Decisions on university financial aid are taken after the admission decisions. Financial Aid LLM candidates are encouraged to explore avenues for financial aid external to the LLM programme.
