This exciting program provides foundational training in Canadian common law to internationally trained lawyers and law graduates. Whether you have a common or civil law degree from outside Canada or a Bachelor of Civil Law from a Canadian university, this program was designed with you in mind. In this program, you’ll take core courses in Canadian common law topics and have a wide range of elective options. The core courses are specifically designed to meet the requirements of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada's National Committee on Accreditation (NCA). The NCA assesses the academic and professional credentials of candidates who wish to apply for admission to the bar of any Canadian common law province. If you are an internationally trained lawyer and are interested in practising law in Canada, we recommend that you contact the NCA before applying to the LLM program, so that you know what courses you are required to take. As part of the Osgoode community, you’ll benefit from academic and career supports to help you achieve your goals. Note: Completing the Professional LLM in Canadian Common Law does not automatically entitle you to practise law in Canada or to be admitted to the Bar of a Canadian province or territory. Consult the NCA or your provincial/territorial law society for more information. Program Format The LLM in Canadian Common Law is available as a full-time (3 terms of study/a full calendar year) or part-time (6 terms of study/2 full calendar years) program. Program starts are generally available in the Fall or Winter term.. The format of this program gives students the flexibility to tailor their studies to their own schedules. LLM courses will be offered in a combination of weekly and intensive formats. Attendance in-person in Toronto is required. The General LLM is open only to applicants who hold an LLB or JD. Osgoode’s various LLM specializations provide graduate-level learning across a number of disciplines. The General LLM gives you the flexibility to build a program that includes three major areas of interest. Flexibility and Customization. In the Professional General LLM, you can choose courses from multiple LLM specializations being offered during your time of study and have the flexibility to build a program that includes two or three major areas of interest. The General LLM provides a high level of customization for lawyers wishing to craft a unique program of study drawing from over 50 LLM courses a year. Areas of Specialization The General LLM requires a declaration of three (3)* areas of specialization at the time of application. Choose from: - Administrative Law - Banking and Financial Services Law - Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law - Business Law - Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution - Constitutional Law - Criminal Law and Procedure - Energy and Infrastructure Law - Family Law - Health Law - Intellectual Property Law - Labour Relations and Employment Law - Securities Law - Tax Law *International Business Law, Canadian Common Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution cannot be declared as one of the three (3) areas of interest for the General LLM. A limited number of ADR courses are available to students in the General LLM. In general, students in the General LLM will craft a plan of study by taking courses from each of the three declared areas specializations. This one-year, full-time Professional LLM program is designed to give law graduates and lawyers from around the world advanced training in international business law. Award-winning faculty teach the latest developments in international trade law, international finance, international business transactions, taxation of cross-border transactions and other related topics. The program provides you with knowledge in critical, core international business law courses while allowing you the opportunity to pursue your academic interests through elective LLM and JD courses. You may also have the opportunity to gain exposure to the North American legal workplace and apply your knowledge and skills through our popular internship program. As part of the Osgoode community, you’ll also benefit from academic and career supports to help you achieve your goals. Degree Requirements The degree requirements will be satisfied upon the completion of 36 credits: 6 credits are drawn from required courses in Legal Research and Writing (3 credits) and Introduction to Canadian Law (3 credits) 21 credits are drawn from a selection of the following International Business Law core courses: - International Business Transactions (6 credits) - International Finance (3 credits) - Taxation of Cross-Border Transactions (6 credits) - International Trade Law (6 credits) - International Commercial Arbitration (6 credits) - Anti-Money Laundering and International Country Sanctions (3 credits) 9 elective credits are drawn from remaining International Business Law core courses, complementary LLM specializations and/or select upper year JD courses You are also required to complete a minimum 30 page research paper as part of your degree. You may complete the research paper requirement by either: - Submitting a 30 page Significant Research Paper as a form of evaluation in at least one course - Completing an Independent Significant Research Paper [3 credits] (30 pages); or - Completing a Major Research Paper [6 credits] (70 pages) Some students will also be required to take a month-long intensive International Business Law Preparatory Course. This course is generally required for students who have completed their law degree in a country other than the U.S. or the U.K. Program Format The LLM in International Business Law is available only as full-time program. The program starts either in early July or early August depending on whether you are required to take our month-long intensive International Business Law Preparatory Course. While many students complete their program requirements by late spring, others take a full year and complete the program in August. Knowledge of tax law is essential in any business environment – and the study of it is intellectually fascinating. This Professional LLM program that can be done either part-time for two-years or full-time for one year offers students an opportunity to gain a broad and deep understanding of the policies, principles and the internal logic of tax laws in Canada and beyond. It covers all aspects of tax law from the most basic rules underlying traditional personal tax planning principles to current developments in the sophisticated design of financial instruments. Courses are taught by a diverse range of scholars and practitioners, all of whom are leaders in their areas of teaching and practice. Degree Requirements The degree requirements will be satisfied upon the completion of 36 credits. There are two options for completing this degree: Option I: Coursework and Major Research Paper [36 credits] - The required course for Tax Law [6 credits]; - 24 additional credits of coursework, at least 18 of which must be from the Tax Law specialization; - A Major Research Paper (70 pages) in the tax law field [6 credits]; and - Advanced Legal Research Workshop. Please note that this will not count towards the 36 credits required to complete the degree. Option II: Coursework only [36 credits] - The required course for Tax Law [6 credits]; - 30 additional credits of coursework, at least 24 of which must be courses from the Tax Law specialization; and - A Significant Research Paper (30 pages) as a means of evaluation for one of the courses in the Tax Law specialization. The Advanced Legal Research Workshop is not required for students writing a Significant Research Paper but is strongly recommended in order for students to review writing and research skills. Program Format Courses will be offered in a combination of weekly and intensive formats. Videoconferencing is available for most courses, although occasional in-person attendance in Toronto is required (refer to the schedule for specific details on each course).
