The Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.; in Latin, Scientiae Juridical Doctor) Program, modeled on the Ph.D. programs in other disciplines, is designed for those seeking to pursue academic careers as teachers and scholars of law. This highly selective program is open only to applicants who possess a distinguished prior academic record in law, show promise of outstanding scholarship, and demonstrate a high potential for completing a scholarly dissertation of the required quality. S.J.D. candidates must have completed an S.J.D. program degree or equivalent in China or a foreign country. Each S.J.D. candidate will be assigned a primary faculty supervisor with expertise in the student's research area and two additional faculty members who form the student's doctoral committee.
The S.J.D. program normally takes a minimum of three years. It will involve one to two semesters of course work. The student must successfully pass oral examinations in the general field of study before formal admission to candidacy. The student will be asked to prepare a research proposal, which must be accepted before research on the dissertation begins. The S.J.D. student's faculty committee will assess the student's progress, make recommendations, and hold an oral examination on the final draft of the dissertation.

The tuition of the S.J.D. program is CNY45500/Year for Doctoral program (Approximately USD 7350/Year).

Students are required to complete a minimum of 26 coursework credits (6 compulsory coursework credits) and write a degree thesis under the supervision of a faculty member.
To qualify for the S.J.D. program degree, students must:
- Successfully complete at least 26 coursework credits.
- Successfully complete: First year courses, Second year thesis proposal, third and fourth year independent research, and an S.J.D program thesis under the supervision of a KoGuan Law faculty member.
- Spend at least two semesters in residence.
For the year of independent research and S.J.D program thesis writing, students are not required to stay in Shanghai.

To be considered for admission to the S.J.D.program, an applicant must have a bachelor's degree. We particularly look for applicants with the following qualifications:
- Non-Chinese citizen
- Complete an LL.M. degree or equivalent in China or a foreign country
- Being enrolled in a law or law-related program
- Being qualified to practice law in a jurisdiction outside Mainland China
- Valid TOEFL(≥90), or academic IELTS(≥6) report
(Native English speaker or the applicants with bachelor master degree in native English nations can be waived from these requirements.)
Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis beginning in September (the fall semester). The S.J.D. program Admissions Committee reviews the whole application package carefully and selects qualified applicants who would best benefit from and contribute to the S.J.D. Program. The Committee makes decisions on individual applications as quickly as possible.
In evaluating applications, the Committee takes into consideration factors including but not limited to the following:
- Academic work, such as grades, class ranking, scholarly publications
- Letters of recommendation
- Professional and personal accomplishments
- Previous legal experience or careers in law teaching and research, government service, the judiciary, international governmental organizations, NGOs and private practice
- Proficiency in the English language

How to Apply
Step 1: Complete the online application
- Print, sign, and attach a 2-inch photo on the application form from the online application system.
Step 2: Pay the Application Fee
The application fee is CNY 800 or USD 130, non-refundable and non-transferable. Payment must be made using CNY or USD.
Step 3: Submit the Application Documents
- Application form from the online application system;
- Degree certificates. Must be original or notarized(Chinese or English notaries are both acceptable);
(students who have not yet graduated should provide an official letter from your university stating the expected graduation date.);
- Official transcripts. Must be original or notarized(Chinese or English notaries are both acceptable);
- Language certificate and score report;
- A copy of Passport;
- Two passport-size photos;
- Two recommendation letters from associate professors or scholars with higher academic titles. Must include the referees 'phone number and email address;
- Remittance notice. Specify your name and payment details.
