J.D./M.A. in Law and Diplomacy (Dual Degree)

Seton Hall University, School of Diplomacy and International Relations

The School of Diplomacy and Seton Hall School of Law offer a joint degree program leading to the degrees of Master of Arts in Diplomacy and International Relations and Juris Doctor. The joint degree presents a unique opportunity for students to combine legal training with a thorough understanding of the political, social, economic, and cultural dynamics of international affairs. In a competitive job market, joint degree recipients possess the training and expertise that make them stand out. The program may be completed in four years and one summer, rather than the five years usually required for the separate completion of both degrees.

Curriculum

Diplomacy and International Relations Component (30 credits)

  • DIPL 6000 - International Relations Theory
  • DIPL 6001 or DIPL 6180 - Politics of Cultural and Ethnic Pluralism or Comparative Foreign Policy
  • DIPL 6002 or DIPL 6004 - International Organizations or Peacemaking and Peacekeeping
  • DIPL 6105 or DIPL 6155 - International Political Economy or Advanced Economic Aspects of International Relations
  • DIPL 6104 or DIPL 6130 - Art and Science of International Negotiation or International Security
  • DIPL 7111 - Internship*
  • DIPL XXXX - Diplomacy Electives

*A student with a clerkship may substitute a Diplomacy elective for the internship requirement.

Law Component (85 credits)

As part of their Law School coursework, students must complete the following requirements:

  • International Legal Studies Group (12 credits)
  • Independent Research (2 credits - WRTG 9142) or a second Advanced Writing Requirement course drawn from the International Legal Studies Group.

Admission

Students must submit separate applications to both Seton Hall's School of Diplomacy and Seton Hall Law and must be accepted for admission to each school. Students should indicate on each application that they wish to be considered for the JD/MA joint degree program.

Additional documents, including letters of recommendation, LSAT scores and transcripts will be extracted from the Law School application. Only one application fee is required; students can request an application fee waiver for the School of Diplomacy portion of the application.

Application/Enrollment Options

  • JD/MA candidates who are accepted to both programs concurrently must enroll only in law courses during the first year of studies and enroll in a combination of law/diplomacy courses thereafter.
  • Students who enroll in the MA stand-alone program are eligible to apply for the JD/MA program during their first year of studies. If admitted to the JD program, candidates must enroll only in law courses for the following year and resume enrollment in a combination of law/diplomacy courses thereafter.
  • Students who enroll in the JD stand-alone program first are eligible to apply for the JD/MA program during the first year of law studies.
  • Students must be in good academic standing in their program of initial enrollment (JD or MA) in order to receive consideration for the joint degree program.
