Program Description

Juris Doctor (Law)

Abraham Lincoln University

Juris Doctor Degree

The Juris Doctor Program requires 140 quarter units and is completed over approximately four years. Upon passing the First-Year Law Students' Examination (FYLSX, also known as the "Baby Bar"), General Bar Examination (GBX, also known as California Bar Exam), the moral character evaluation, the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE), and not being in arrears with family support obligations, ALU graduates are eligible to become full members of the State Bar of California and are eligible to practice in California.

The university provides working adults with a focused and practical online legal education. A significant difference in ALU’s educational model as an online distance learning institution is in the three class options provided to enhance the student’s learning experience. Students may:

  • Attend live classes online, participating in class discussion with professor and other students via online chat functions,
  • View recorded lectures online at a convenient time, or
  • Those students local to the Los Angeles area can attend classes in our classrooms, centrally located in Los Angeles. Although on-campus attendance is not required, it is a popular option for local students.

ALU Law School Disclosures

Abraham Lincoln University School of Law's authority to grant a J.D. degree, which qualifies graduates to take the California Bar Examination, is as an unaccredited, distance learning law school that is registered with the Committee of Bar Examiners.

The School of Law is registered with the Committee of Bar Examiners (CBE) of the State Bar of California as an unaccredited distance learning law school. ALU’s authority to grant a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, which qualifies graduates to take the California Bar Examination, is through the Committee of Bar Examiners. ALU students must pass the First-Year Law Students’ Examination (FYLSX) at the end of the first year of law school study.

Bar Program and Bar Eligibility

At Abraham Lincoln University, our goal is to prepare you to pass the California Bar Examination through our quality online law classes. Our California Bar Examination preparation courses are meant to fully ready students by providing them with the necessary knowledge and confidence for passing the California Bar Examination.

After graduation from the Juris Doctor, students are eligible to sit for the California Bar Examination and upon successful completion of the California Bar Examination, the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam and meeting all applicable moral character requirements, and not being in arrears with family support obligations, can become members of the State Bar of California and be eligible to practice in California and Federal courts.

Every law student that intends to be a general applicant for admission to practice law in California must register with the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California no later than 90 days after he or she begins the study of law and Bar preparation courses to obtain California Bar eligibility.

The method of instruction at this law school for the Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree program is principally by technological means including interactive classes.

Students enrolled in the J.D. degree program at this law school who successfully complete the first year of law study must pass the First-Year Law Students' Examination required by Business and Professions Code §6060(h) and Title 4, Division 1 of the Rules of the State Bar of California (Admissions Rules) as part of the requirements to qualify to take the California Bar Examination. A student who passes the First-Year Law Students' Examination within three (3) administrations of the examination after first becoming eligible to take it will receive credit for all legal studies completed to the time the examination is passed. A student who does not pass the examination within three (3) administrations of the examination after first becoming eligible to take it must be promptly disqualified from the law school's J.D. degree program. If the dismissed student subsequently passes the examination, the student is eligible for re-enrollment in this law school's J.D. program, but will receive credit for only one year of legal study.

Study at, or graduation from, this law school may not qualify a student to take the bar examination or to satisfy the requirements for admission to practice in jurisdictions other than California. A student intending to seek admission to practice law in a jurisdiction other than California should contact the admitting authority in that jurisdiction for information regarding the legal education requirements in that jurisdiction for admission to the practice of law.

Registration consists of the filing of a form that inquires into the applicant’s age, addresses, general education and legal education. The registration form must be completed accurately under penalty of perjury.
