Program Description

The Master of Laws is a 2-year full-time programme in English, offering case-oriented courses in a modular setup within a broad range of legal fields.

Program Content

Year one

  • A common first semester with fixed mandatory courses and methodological research and communication skills (30 ECTS credits).
  • The courses are focused on the foundations of International and European law, to create a level playing field for students and prepare them for the subsequent semester modules of 18 ECTS credits each. In the second semester of year one, the student chooses one of the modules ‘European Constitutionalism and Fundamental Rights’, ‘Sustainable Development and Global Justice’ and ‘Commercial Transactions & Disputes’.
  • The student also writes a research proposal (3 ECTS credits) for the Master’s dissertation in year two and engages in a legal clinic (9 ECTS credits).

Year two

  • In the first semester of year two, the student chooses one of the modules ‘Commercial Transactions: Rights & Governance’ and ‘Diversity and Law’, or opts for a semester abroad.
  • In the second semester of year two, the student chooses one of the modules ‘European Constitutionalism and Fundamental Rights’, ‘Sustainable Development and Global Justice’ and ‘Private and Business Law’, or opts for a semester abroad.
  • During year two the student writes and defends the Master’s dissertation (18 ECTS credits).
  • During the programme the student takes one or two elective courses (for a total of 6 ECTS credits) in Antwerp or abroad.

Career Path

The programme targets lawyers who wish to work in an international environment such as internationally oriented law firms, international organisations, international civil society and multinational enterprises.

It also gives ample attention to research skills. Excellent graduates may develop research through a PhD and possibly pursue a career in academics.
