Program Description

LL.M. in Transnational Commercial Practice

Center for International Legal Studies

Four institutions organize the LL.M. in Transnational Commercial Practice. The Center for International Legal Studies (Salzburg, Austria) has more than 5,000 lawyer members throughout the world. The Law Faculty of Lazarski University (Warsaw, Poland) has ranked first among Polish university law faculties for the last seven years. Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest, Hungary), founded in 1635, ranks as the leading law faculty in Hungary. Boston University School of Law (Boston, Massachusetts) was established in 1872 and ranks in the top 25 of more than 200 law schools accredited by the American Bar Association.

The Central European locations (Budapest and Warsaw) and the session format of two weeks each provide a great advantage to those who cannot take a year away from their work, particularly active practitioners, to those who cannot afford the time or cost of a year abroad and/or to those who may have difficulty obtaining a visa to study in the United States. The program is designed to bring experienced lawyers together with expert faculty members, and the seminar structure lends itself to active exchange among the participants. Thirty-two lawyers from 13 countries, ranging in age from 25 to 65 years, participated in the 2017 two-week LL.M. sessions.

The LL.M. requires satisfaction of 21 credits over three cycles offered each year in Budapest in March and June and in Warsaw in April.

LL.M. courses are taught in English by faculty provided in March and April by CILS, Lazarski University, and Eötvös Loránd University. Selected participants may complete up to nine credits in a session offered each June in Budapest, with faculty provided by Boston University.

The next LL.M. sessions will be conducted 15 - 28 April 2018 in Budapest, 13 - 26 May 2018 in Warsaw, and 19 June - 1 July 2018 in Budapest. Tuition for 2018 for Budapest in March and Warsaw in April is US $3800. Tuition for 2018 for Budapest in June is US $5400. Students typically attend one or two sessions per year. The LL.M. must be completed within five years of commencement. Fifty per cent tuition and other scholarships are available.

Applicants for the LL.M. in Transnational Commercial Practice must hold a recognized first degree in law and have a demonstrated record of academic and professional competence. Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate competence in the language.

The LL.M. in Transnational Commercial Practice requires 21 credits. The paths available to obtain the degree are:

  • Three spring sessions, one in Budapest (6 credits) and two in Warsaw (12 credits) or two in Budapest (12 credits) and one in Warsaw (6 credits) = 18 credits, plus (a) Distance Learning Course (Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments, 3 credits), or (b) 30 hours of CILS CLE (3 credits), or (c) Directed research paper of 15,000 to 18,000 words (3 credits).
  • Two spring sessions, one in Budapest (6 credits) and one in Warsaw (6 credits) = 12 credits, plus one June session in Budapest (9 credits). Enrollment in the June session is limited. Admission to a June session requires excellent academic performance in a prior spring session and entails substantially more work than the spring sessions.

Application may be done online.
