Program Description

LLB English and Italian Law

University of Kent, Kent Law School

Canterbury Campus

The English and Italian Law programme gives you the opportunity to add valuable knowledge of Italian Law and Italian language to your degree: you spend a year studying law in Italy, after through language preparation and grounding in European legal systems at Kent.

The year abroad:

  • entails study at the University of Bologna - where we have had a well-established link for many years.
  • is backed by two years' preparation - you advance your prior knowledge (if any) of Italian language in the two years before your year abroad and take a full-year module to introduce you to European legal systems, including the Italian.

Year one

The first year of the programme is carefully designed to give a grounding for your later studies in both English law, and in Italian language for your year abroad.

You take these modules:

  • Public Law I*
  • Introduction to Obligations*
  • Critical Introduction to Law
  • Foundations of Property*
  • and normally:

Introductory Italian (although advanced or semi-native speakers may be exempted from this module and instead study Advanced Italian or Criminal Law)

Year two

The second year again builds towards your year abroad as well as towards your English qualifying law degree. You take modules totaling 120 credits, which include more language training and an introduction to European legal systems in preparation for your study of Italian law next year.

A typical combination would be: European Legal Systems, Intermediate or Advanced Italian, European Union Law, Public Law II, The Law of Obligations*.

Year three

In your year abroad at the University of Bologna, you take modules amounting to 60 credits (roughly equivalent to half of a normal year at Kent).

The results from your year abroad are given a half-weighting in incorporating them into your degree result.

Year four

In your final year, you again take modules totaling 120 credits. Most students will want to complete their exemption modules, and there is still some scope to explore other areas of interest, maybe but not necessarily following up issues arising from the modules studied in Italy.

A typical combination would be: Land Law, Equity, Criminal Law*, 2x30 credit options.
