What is canon law?

Canon law is a set of ordinances and regulations made by ecclesiastical authority, for the government of a Christian organization or church and its members. Canon law concerns the church's external structure and organization (and not what goes on inside it) and is distinct from civil law.

What will I study during my canon law degree?

During a canon law degree, you will study the history of the Catholic Church, papal decrees and letters, ecclesiastical documents from councils and synods, and texts from great doctors of the Church. You will also learn about codes of law - most notably the Code of Canon Law – which is a collection of laws that govern the Roman Catholic Church, and the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches.

What is a canon law degree?

A canon law degree is a university qualification in the study of canon law. It includes studying church history, church principles and church organization. A bachelor's degree or an advanced diploma may be enough for you to enter the workforce as a paralegal in a law firm. But in order to become canon lawyers and be eligible for higher positions in law firms, you will need to study at the master's or doctoral level.
