5 Bachelor of Laws Programs in European Law

Students earning an LLB in European Law will be proficient in understanding the legal systems of European Union countries as well as non-EU countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, for example). Programs encompassing a European Law degree will also emphasize aspects of international law, maritime laws and social/economical systems of European countries.

What is European Law?

European law fundamentally focuses on the set of laws governing European Union countries. Although no formal constitution has yet to be codified by the EU, treaties have been implemented that stipulate EU regulations meant to function as codified laws. These treaties also delineate guidelines called Directives and Regulations when the creation of new laws is necessary.

What does an LLB in European Law consist of?

The European Court of Justice is responsible for official interpretations of European Union law and decides whether actions taken by the EU are legal and valid. Students earning an LLB in European Law will need to take courses dealing with case law studies involving decisions made by the European Court of Justice as well as important case adjudications made by different EU countries.

What are the requirements for an LLB in European Law?

In addition to traditional classes comprising courses of a typical LLB program, students wishing to earn an LLB in European law will need to take a language course at the "B2" level (established by the Council of Europe, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). It is also recommended that students acquire a rudimentary understanding of the Polish language at the level designated "A1" by the Council of Europe's language requirements.

Which career with an LLB in European Law?

Individuals possessing an LLB in European Law are qualified to immediately gain employment in the country they earned their degree. Working in other European counties generally requires the lawyer passes a country-specific bar exam or other test that permits him/her to legally practice law in that country. Since EU law is fairly uniform, the process of obtaining permission to work as a lawyer in different European countries is not time-consuming or difficult.

Wages earned by holders of an LLB in European Law are higher than traditional LLB wages due to the need for the lawyer to be familiar with special laws specific to European countries.
