Preparing you for practice

The LLM Legal Practice integrates BPP University Law School's market-leading LPC with the professional skills that trainees need to succeed in the modern world of law. Created in conjunction with leading law firms and legal academics, our LLM Legal Practice is rigorous and stimulating and practice-focused.

On the LLM Legal Practice, you learn by doing, applying the law to simulated realistic case studies. To ensure you get the most from your LLM Legal Practice, we teach in small groups delivered by experienced tutors who are qualified lawyers. We believe in offering a high level of tutor-student interaction and, throughout your studies, you will have the support of a dedicated personal tutor and can sign up for one-to-one mentoring.

Stand out from the crowd

The LLM Legal Practice offers you the opportunity to develop the advanced skills, commercial awareness and specialist knowledge that firms demand. You will study all of the core areas on the standard LPC and can choose from a wide range of electives depending on the type of law you want to specialize in. You will also choose one of three bespoke Practice Ready modules: Negotiation and Case Analysis; Clinical Legal Education; or Business Management & Strategy to further enhance your practical and commercial skills.

Additionally, by studying the compulsory Law Review and Reform module you will conduct original research into an area of the law that needs reform and learn to see the law operating from a user's perspective rather than an academic one.

Enhance your employability

From the moment you accept your place, you'll have access to our careers service, which offers:

  • Application reviews for recognized periods of training or placements in law firms, companies, and the not-for-profit sector
  • Support for researching firms
  • Advice on CVs and covering letters
  • Help with preparing for interviews and assessment center advice
  • Mock interviews
  • Advice on alternative careers

You will never leave an advice session empty-handed. Together, we'll draw up a career action plan which details the steps you should take to achieve your career goals.

You’ll also be allocated a tutor who can advise you prior to your course commencing. Their professional experience can benefit you if you are looking to apply for your period of recognized training before starting on the LLM Legal Practice programme.

We also provide you with our timetabled Employability Week which is a great opportunity for you to develop your professional skills and to improve your personal brand to prepare you for your legal career. All LLM Legal Practice students will be timetabled to attend three compulsory workshops which offer essential tips on how to handle the first week in a law firm and develop your commercial awareness.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to attend a wide range of optional workshops designed and delivered in conjunction with leading law firms.

Flexible options to fit your lifestyle

You can choose to study full-time or part-time. If you study full-time you would normally complete the LLM Legal Practice in 12 months but there is an option to complete in 9 months. The provisional term dates documents for the part-time and full-time modes provide more detail of the structure of the programme and anticipated completion dates. All of our centers offer a full time and part time start in September. You can also study full-time from January in London, Leeds, and Manchester.

Our full-time and part-time programmes are designed to fit around your lifestyle. Depending on which center you choose and your start date, you can select from various modes and timetable options.

At some centers our full-time programme allows you to study over two, three or four days a week and our part-time programme is designed to fit around your other commitments such as work and family, with the day, evening, and weekend options and all lectures delivered online for maximum flexibility.

Please note, timetables are subject to availability and vary between center and mode.

Small group sessions (SGS) – starting your professional practice

The majority of your teaching for the Core Practice Areas (Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice and Litigation), Skills and other Core Modules, and the Vocational Elective modules will be in SGSs (which are typically 2 hours), supplemented by your own independent private study. SGSs involve a wide range of different learning and teaching techniques, combining individual and teamwork, and involving:

  • Presentations

  • Mock hearings

  • Negotiations

  • Drafting exercises

  • Problem-solving

Online tutorials

The majority of your teaching for the Practice Ready Module and the Law Review and Reform module will by way of synchronous (live) or asynchronous (recorded) online tutorials or lectures supplemented by your own independent private study. Your tutors will also be there to offer constructive advice and guidance whilst you nurture and develop your critical thinking and self-reliance when undertaking these modules.

Independent private study

You will be required to undertake independent private study for all modules on the LLM Legal Practice. From the start of the LLM Legal Practice, we will support you in cultivating the ability to study autonomously and to reflect on areas of learning and/or practice to improve your performance over time.

Client portfolios

You will be taught your Core Practice Areas in the context of three particular ‘clients’. By considering three clients’ businesses in this way, you will appreciate how their businesses operate as a whole and how decisions made in the context of a property or business transaction might impact upon ongoing litigation. Using client portfolios also illustrates how clients are often represented by different departments within a firm, which closely replicates real life.

When you select your Vocational Elective modules and Practice Ready Module, you will act for a broad range of clients reflecting the diversity of experience in practice. This will continue to develop not only your legal acumen but also your commercial awareness.

Study Materials

For the majority of the modules that you will study on the LLM Legal Practice, you will be provided with a (hard copy) materials pack before you begin your studies. This will generally contain:

  • Module outline

  • Chapter handouts

  • SGS Descriptions

  • Your permitted materials for the module assessment (where applicable)

Each Chapter handout is accompanied by a recorded (asynchronous) online lecture. Lectures typically last 1 hour.

Classroom materials are drafted by our tutors who have worked in practice as qualified lawyers. This ensures that the practical activities undertaken in your SGSs, tutorials or independent study are all in the context of realistic case studies which thoroughly prepare you for working in practice.

Online learning materials

All of our full-time and part-time students have access to high-quality online lectures in a variety of formats for you to watch as many times as you wish for both preparation and revision. A version of every SGS is available online and our synchronous online tutorials are also recorded and made available online, so you can consolidate and revise whenever and wherever you choose.

Character and suitability

You are required to disclose issues relating to character and suitability before you commence your recognized period of training and again on admission as a solicitor by the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority. If you are concerned that you may have a character and suitability issue you should follow the early assessment procedure as training cannot commence until the assessment has taken place.
