European Law

LLM is Latin for Legum Magister, signifying Master of Laws. Our Master of Laws (LL.M.) Program in American Law is a one-year graduate program. Foreign law graduates who successfully complete the program are awarded the degree “LL.M. in American Law.”

The skills and concepts one learns from studying law can depend on the country where the studies take place. Unlike some law studies, studying European law can teach a student about legal ideas that spread beyond a single country.

The people, language, and culture of the Netherlands is referred to as "Dutch". A modern European country today, Netherlands preserved its highly international character and is known for its liberal mentality. The Netherlands has many universities. The country has recently converted their own titles into the bachelor/master system. There are two types of universities: Academic (focussing more on theoretical knowledge, aka "Universiteit") or Applied Sciences (focussing more on practical knowledge, aka "Hogeschool")

The European Law School is a unique one-year English taught programme aimed at offering students a well-informed understanding at an advanced level of the process of the Europeanisation of law. In particular, the programme aims to provide in-depth knowledge of European Union law, the manner in which it affects the national legal order of the Member States and/or Comparative Law and its methods (with an emphasis on the legal system of the Netherlands - as the programme's home legal system - and that of Germany, France and England as representatives of the traditional major legal families in Europe). The programme equips students with the tools and skills necessary to successfully compete for positions and parti¬cipate in a national, European and/or transnational, legal work environment. The Ius Commune specialisation involves comparative law, studies common principles of European private and public law and explores how these principles can help to develop and shape EU law. The free track allows students to combine the main features and benefits of the EU law and Ius Commune specialisations. The courses are taught by members of the Maastricht Centre for European law (MCEL), which is one of Europe’s largest and most prestigious centres for the study of European Law. Prof.... [-]
