International Trade Law

The Master of Laws degree commonly known as the LL.M., is an advanced graduate law degree. Candidates often already hold a first degree in law and are interested in furthering their studies of the law. Obtaining an LL.M. possesses a number of distinct advantages.

Programs in international trade law may prepare attorneys to support diplomatic efforts to enhance global trade relations. Courses may prepare students for negotiating complex trade agreements and treaties, resolving multifaceted dispute discussions, and expanding commercial trade opportunities.

Our innovative Cross-Border Legal Studies LL.M. Program, one of the first of its kind in the United States, recognizes the increasingly global nature of legal practice and the need for skilled attorneys to guide clients through their cross-border interactions. Located just 20 minutes from Canada, the US’s largest trading partner, the School of Law is uniquely situated to provide students with exposure to cross-border legal issues both inside and outside the classroom. A strong network of alumni based in Buffalo, New York and Ontario, Canada engage in a wide range of cross-border legal practice including trade, tax, immigration, real estate, and corporate and transactional work. These practitioners serve as community partners in the program and informal mentors to LL.M. students throughout the course of their studies. In addition, each student is assigned an academic advisor to provide one-on-one guidance throughout the program. Admission to the program requires a first degree in law. In addition to the capstone course, admitted students select four courses from over 30 offerings relevant to cross-border legal studies including international business, tax, corporate, immigration, trade and environment-related topics. International students will additionally take a legal research and writing class and a course that introduces the United States legal system. This program prepares students to meet the challenges of an increasingly global economy by giving them the knowledge and training needed to handle complex transnational transactions that define the current legal and business environment. This program includes core courses in European Union Law, International Law, International Business Transactions, and International Trade Regulation, as well as a range of elective courses in such subjects as Admiralty and International Maritime Law, U.S. Contract Law, International Arbitration, and Cross-Border Mergers and Acquisitions. Students may also choose courses from an evolving curriculum that reflects current global economic power players with courses such as Islamic Finance and Estate Planning and China and International Law. CREDIT HOURS Each student is required to complete a minimum of 24 credits of approved courses; the maximum number of credits permitted is 27.
