3-Semester, 34 credit hours, including a specialization in a chosen legal field
Scholarships: All admitted students will be considered for merit-based scholarships at the time of application.
Classes: LL.M. students create their own program of study and take classes with their J.D. student colleagues.

Eligibility: To qualify, students must demonstrate that they:
have completed the necessary legal education required to obtain an LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws), LL.M. (Master of Laws), or J.M. (Juris Master) in a foreign country or to take the equivalent of the bar examination in that country; or
are qualified to practice law in a foreign country; or
are determined to possess sufficient legal education or experience to satisfactorily complete the LL.M. program.

The general LL.M. program offers law graduates an opportunity to broaden their backgrounds in certain specialized areas of law by enrolling in advanced courses and seminars and by engaging in specialized research. Although the School of Law awards no specific subject designated LL.M. degrees under this program, most students seeking this degree concentrate in areas such as corporate and commercial law, international law, legal practice and procedure, natural resources law, or property law.

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree program at the University of California, Irvine School of Law offers a first-rate legal education to lawyers, judges, government officials and others wishing to become educated about the legal system and practice of law in the United States. We offer a general LL.M. program that can be tailored to each individual’s interests, thus uniquely equipping students with the knowledge and skills to excel in today’s global legal community, whatever their personal and professional goals may be.
The program is a one-year, full-time, 24-credit course of study in advanced legal topics, designed primarily for lawyers trained outside of the United States. Students are required to take four courses: Introduction to American Law; Research, Analysis, and Writing in American Law; American Legal Practice in Context; and Professional Responsibility, Globalization, and the Legal Profession in the United States. For the remainder of their courses, students select from a broad range of courses across the upper-level curriculum. Dedicated staff are available to assist students in planning their course of study and, if desired, ensuring that students’ coursework meets the eligibility requirements of California, New York, or other state bars....

The LL.M. Program at Penn State’s Dickinson Law gives students and lawyers trained outside of the U.S. a high-level understanding of the American legal system. The program’s foundational courses introduce you to our unique analytic methodologies.
To ensure that we can provide hands-on training for our students, Dickinson Law has capped each LL.M. cohort at 20 students. This intentionally small class size ensures that students receive focused attention from faculty, guarantees ample opportunities to learn in practice settings, and fulfills the law school’s promise to best position its students to secure employment in a competitive marketplace.
The LL.M. program is a 24-credit, one academic year course of study. Students must enroll in at least 12 credits per semester and may enroll in no more than 17 credits per semester. Mitchell Hamline’s LL.M. introduces foreign law graduates to the legal system of the United States. The program brings together a global community of lawyers who receive the specialized training and education they need to practice law and compete on an international level. LL.M. students attend classes with Mitchell Hamline J.D. students, choosing courses and seminars that reflect their individual practice interests.
Key components of the LL.M.
Structured for students who possess an LL.B. or equivalent degree earned outside the United States.
Most students complete the program in two full-time semesters.
Each student is assigned a faculty advisor based on the student’s interest or area of study. Together, the advisor and student design a course of study that includes rigorous law courses and the opportunity to learn from practicing lawyers and judges. Students and advisors meet regularly throughout the program.
Students take a required introductory course and then choose from the law school’s J.D. courses.
Tutors are available for LL.M. students.
All degree-seeking LL.M. students must complete a substantial writing component.
Students can choose courses in specialized areas of law, such as alternative dispute resolution, intellectual property, international and comparative law, business and corporate law, and others.

The LL.M. program is designed for international students with a first degree in law. The program requires at least two semesters of full-time study in residence. In addition to the traditional LLM, degree options include an LLM with Thesis, for students interested in academic legal writing, and a number of LLM Specializations, for students interested in a specific area of law.
Traditional LLM Degree
Graduate students are admitted for at least two semesters in residence, leading to the degree of Master of Laws (LLM). To qualify for the LLM degree, students must:
Complete at least 24 hours of course credit;
Complete one academic year in residence in the Law School;
Complete B504 Introduction to American Law for 2 credits and B530 Legal Discourse and Writing for 2 credits;
Carry no fewer than 8 hours of course credit per semester;
Maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0; and
Complete the degree requirements in no more than three consecutive semesters.

The LLM curriculum is primarily elective in nature. Students should meet with the Director of Graduate Law Programs to select courses to best fulfill their career objectives. International students are required to enroll in the seminar entitled, Introduction to US Law, Legal Reasoning and Writing in their first semester.
