MBA/Juris Doctor (JD)

University of Pittsburgh: Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business

Program Description

MBA/Juris Doctor (JD)

University of Pittsburgh: Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business

MBA/Juris Doctor (JD)

Admission to this joint-degree program is ordinarily granted either prior to attenxding the Katz School of Business and the School of Law or during the first year of study in the law school. In exceptional cases and with permission, however, students may apply to the MBA/JD program after completing the second year of law school. Occasionally, a student will begin studies in the Katz School before applying to the MBA/JD program. Such students may apply to the joint-degree program during their first semester of study.

One major advantage is that what would normally take five years (two of MBA, three of law) is reduced to 3.5 years. This means substantial savings in time and money. Katz can make this possible because it offers an 11-month MBA program.

To be enrolled in this joint-degree program, applicants must submit separate applications and be admitted both to the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and to the Katz School. A separate joint-degree program application must be completed and a copy sent to each school. GMAT and LSAT scores are required for all applicants. A joint admissions committee, made up of faculty from both schools, will either grant or deny admission to the MBA/JD program.

Applications to the joint-degree program can be found at either school.

Degree Requirements

Students enrolled in a joint-degree program are required to fulfill the degree requirements of both administering schools as modified by participation in the joint-degree program.

Program Structure

The structuring of students' programs will be flexible. A student may start in either school. The only requirement is that the first year in the School of Law must be taken in its entirety, with no outside courses. A variety of program sequences are possible, depending on the individual student's preferences and needs.

All students in the joint degree MBA programs with the School of Law or the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) pay tuition based on a formula. During the first year at the Katz Graduate School of Business, students pay full tuition for two terms (36 credits) at the then-current School of Business rate for the One-year MBA program. For the remaining term(s), students pay tuition equal to the sum of (1) 85% of the then-current School of Law or GSPIA rate, and (2) 42.5% of the then-current School of Business rate for the One-year MBA program; students who receive permission to graduate early still must pay this amount.
