The paralegal is a crucial piece of any legal support team. Paralegals conduct expert legal research, draft documents, maintaining files, interact with clients as well as provide administrative support. The Paralegal Studies program introduces degree and certificate students to the essential computer applications necessary to the legal field.

The paralegal studies student will learn the principles of law and fundamentals to ensure the law firm, governmental agency or organization is operating within applicable legal frameworks. Degree and certificate students will learn skills for communication, writing, conflict resolution and legal negotiation. The Paralegal Studies student will learn proper computer skills for legal research and litigation support. They will also use these computer skills to organize and maintain documentation, exhibits and witness testimony. Since paralegals work closely with clients, witnesses and opposing counsel, the degree and certificate student will create interpersonal skills to build good relationships and allow clients and witnesses to feel comfortable talking with the paralegal student. Critical to a paralegal student is research skills and learning to gather facts of the case to help draft legal documents. All of these skills will be focused on in the Mildred Elley Paralegal Studies program.

Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026 according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, much faster than the average for all occupations. As law firms try to increase the efficiency of legal services and reduce their costs, they are expected to hire more paralegals and legal assistants.
