Program Description

Research LLM in Public International Law

University of Amsterdam

The two-year Research Master’s programme in Public International Law aims to give students knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of public international law, with a particular focus on key areas of the international rule of law.

Students of the Research Master's Public International Law will engage with questions of legal science and international legal research and will acquire the skills they need in order to apply their knowledge to conduct fundamental and applied research. Graduates of the Research Master’s may apply for an accelerated, three-year PhD track.

Study programme

During the first year, students gain an understanding of the foundations of public international law and, more specifically, the international rule of law. In the second year, students will have the opportunity to specialise in a topic within the theme of the international rule of law, for example in the field of human rights, criminal law or humanitarian law.

First year

During the first year, students gain an understanding of the foundations of public international law and, more specifically, the international rule of law. They are also trained in theories and methods of legal research. Under the supervision of a senior researcher, students form small groups that contribute to research projects being carried out within the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL). Master classes help students to improve their writing, presentation, debating and argumentation skills.

Second year

In the second year, students will have the opportunity to specialise in a topic within the theme of the international rule of law, for example in the field of human rights, criminal law or humanitarian law. This can take place in Amsterdam or at a foreign law school in Europe, the United States or elsewhere. Students take part in a research seminar and are intensively supervised as they conduct research for their theses. The theses are expected to meet high academic and scientific standards.

PhD option

Graduates of the Research Master’s may apply for an accelerated, three-year PhD track.

Career prospects

This Research Master's programme trains students for a career as a researcher, either inside or outside academia. Students also learn the skills needed to write a dissertation. Due to a combination of training in substantive law, analytical skills and theoretical reflection, students will have excellent prospects or various types of intellectually demanding careers in public international law. Graduates can expect to work for international organisations, government institutions, universities, international and domestic courts, and law firms.
