Introduction
About
The Master en Droit Bancaire et Financier Européen is one of the premier programmes in this field offered in continental Europe. The investment funds law option in the second semester of the second year is a legal qualification unique in Europe.
The Master focuses on the study of three essential pillars – banking law, securities, and capital markets law, and investment funds law – or Collective Investment Schemes (CIS) law – in the framework of European Union law, Luxembourg law, and comparative law.
The teaching team includes academics and renowned practitioners, specialized in banking and financial law.
Making use of modern and interactive teaching methods, blending individual study and teamwork, the programme combines the acquisition of basic concepts in the first semester and their practical application in the second semester through case-based learning developed by practitioners.

Curriculum
Structure of studies
The “Master en Droit Bancaire et Financier Européen” builds on a joint first year (M1) of all six LL.M. specializations offered by the Faculty of Law, Economics, and Finance, offering the necessary foundations to pursue the programme. Module 3 in the first semester of this joint first year includes an obligatory course on European banking and financial law. Module 6 in the second semester of the M1 offers an obligatory seminar on European investment funds law.
The second year (M2) of the “Master in Droit Bancaire et Financier Européen” constitutes a programme dedicated to banking and financial law based on three pillars – banking law, securities, and capital markets law, and investment funds law (Collective Investment Schemes – CIS). The first semester of the M2 is designed as a common core to allow all students to acquire and master the basics of these three pillars. In the second semester, the Master splits into two tracks. The general track deepens knowledge of the three pillars with an emphasis on Luxembourg law and comparative banking and financial law. The Collective Investment Schemes track offers students a specialisation in this area through in-depth study of Luxembourg investment funds law and different types of investment funds (UCITS and AIF) as well as certain specific aspects (taxation, criminal law, rules of conduct, etc.) while also providing insights into comparative investment funds law and portfolio management.
Programme
The first semester programme is dedicated to learning the basics of European banking and financial law. The second semester is dedicated to seminars and case-based learning. Since 2012, students can choose, upon agreement of the direction of the programme, to follow in the second semester an "Investment funds" track.
A selected number of students, upon availability, can take part free of charge in the high level "Islamic Finance Seminar" which takes place usually in March.
The programme can be followed in one year or, upon agreement and for a limited number of participants, on a part-time basis.
Part-time programme – two years of study
Students have the possibility to follow the Master en Droit Bancaire et Financier on a part-time option. Please see below the structure of the programme to be followed in the first year of part-time study, designed to ensure the pedagogical progression of the courses, including the elective course chosen by students in the summer semester.
In order to ensure the coherence of the programme and the organization of studies, students cannot compose their own schedule of courses. Students need to attend all seminars in any given course.
