University of South Bohemia - Faculty of Health and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of the University of South Bohemia (FHSS USB) has a unique position in the Czech Republic, particularly due to its interconnection of health care and social topics. Our aim is for graduates to understand and apply a holistic approach an approach that looks at a person as a whole and thus ensures that both the body and the soul receive support. The harmonious combination of these perspectives offers opportunities to train professionals who can perform their profession as a mission. This constitutes a great advantage for the Faculty in the current world – people educated in this way will always be needed in the workplace. The Faculty is an educational institution that is distinctively focused on the health and social care field. It carries out creative activities in the sphere of application, in the frame of specific projects, and direct clinical and fieldwork with people who are disadvantaged both health-wise and socially. It develops scientific and research activities and international cooperation with important institutions and professional centers.

For many years now, the number of student applications has been continually higher than the capacity. This is due to the opportunities which the faculty’s courses provide for employment, its favorable location and its cross-border collaboration with educational institutions in the neighboring countries, a very good network of international partner organizations and cooperation within humanitarian and development aid, its right to appoint both associate professors and professors, and its use of modern means of education techniques. The Faculty prepares professionals who are in high demand. You will always find its students and graduates in situations where adverse health and social problems need to be dealt with.

FHSS USB teaches a wide range of disciplines. Education is closely linked to practice; therefore, the graduates find employment easily. They are prepared to not only help with the improvement of patients’ health conditions but also to integrate people into society and solve social problems.

The Faculty is an institution that truly lives up to its motto: We teach people to help. Thanks to this, the faculty trains students for whom their profession can become their mission. A demanding mission, but a mission that allows them to lead fulfilling lives.

Science and research

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences focuses on education, research, and development in the area of health and its interconnection with the social sphere. Its aim is to interconnect the basic research with applied research, i. e. the research examines not "only" the reality surrounding us, but also the way of transferring the findings into practice. The results of scientific activities are reflected in publications, conferences, workshops, as well as in long-term cooperation with the non-profit and the governmental sector oriented towards the direct work with people.

For a long time, the faculty has been successfully implementing research projects recorded in the Central Project Database (CPD) and thus brings a number of important publications that have to be documented for the guaranty of study courses and subjects. Since 2000, these have been projects accepted by e. g. the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic (the COST projects – Cooperation on Scientific and Technical Research) or by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic (Healthcare Research Agency), as well as projects funded by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic and other donors. Scientific and research outcomes are published and sent to the Register of Outcome Information (ROI).

The faculty deal with the following research topics:

  • Nursing and midwifery
  • Social work issues
  • Social determinants of health
  • Special pedagogy and psychology
  • Radiology, toxicology and civil protection
