Campus Features

The University of Western States main campus is located in a bustling neighborhood, 15 minutes from downtown Portland and close to public transportation at 8000 NE Tillamook Street. The neighborhood, Madison South, offers a lively atmosphere and borders the neighborhoods of Sumner, Roseway, Parkrose, Cully, Montavilla, and Rose City. Some landmarks and attractions near to campus include the Grotto, Rocky Butte Natural Area, Rose City Golf Course, and Madison High School – as well as many restaurants and coffee shops. The main campus is served by a TriMet bus stop adjacent to the site and a MAX Light Rail Station within one-quarter mile. It is also on the Tillamook Neighborhood Greenway bike route. The building itself holds active learning classrooms, an accessible clinic, and modern equipment and resources.

Highlights of our campus include:

Four traditional lecture classrooms (one of which can be divided into two smaller classrooms).
Three multi-purpose classrooms to allow hands-on practice and active learning.
Four technique labs.
Specialty classrooms include a science lab, a computer lab, and a radiographic technique lab.
Flexible furniture in classrooms so that the space can be changed in the future as needed.
An exercise area that is roughly 4,000 square feet.
At least six dedicated private study rooms as well as increased space for both quiet and group study options:
- 1,800 square feet of dedicated and closed-off quiet study space.
- 2,700 square feet of group study space in the student commons.
- Roughly 3,600 square feet of study space in the library.
A modern healthcare facility designed to fulfill patient needs and provide exceptional opportunities for clinical training.
A prominent location, close to public transportation options, allows for the university to easily serve its’ neighborhood and the Portland community.

Scholarships and Funding

Graduate Studies Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500-1,000, dependent on funding availability and the applicant pool.

Qualifications:

Acceptance in the following programs: MS-HNFM, MS-SPP, MS-CMHC, MS-SM (standalone only), EDD-SPP, EDD-SPP with CMHC specialization, DCN
Must be incoming students for fall.

Essay Question (350-word minimum, 500-word maximum, 12-point font, double-spaced):

What degree are you pursuing at UWS and how will this degree help you fulfill your professional goals?
- Preference will be given to applicants who detail volunteer, academic, and/or professional experiences and career goals that promote and increase diversity and inclusion within their desired career paths and academic attendance at UWS.

Deadline: The last application deadline was noon, PST August 5, 2022. Late and/or incomplete applications are not considered.

Financial Aid

The office of financial aid strives to bring the cost of education within reach through a variety of financial aid programs. Please do not hesitate to contact the office of financial aid if you have any further questions.

Financial Aid Basics

The primary source of federal funding for graduate education is student loans.
Students are free to pursue non-federal loans (through a bank or other lending agency).
You must file a FAFSA for each academic year you will attend and plan to receive financial aid. UWS awards on a summer through spring cycle.
Federal loans will require the completion of a “Master Promissory Note” and “Entrance Counseling” before those funds can be disbursed.
Federal loans are paid on a quarterly basis, and if you have completed all the required paperwork and eligibility requirements on time, will typically be paid to your student account during week two of each term.
Half-time enrollment (5+ graduate credits) is required each term both for eligibility for new loans for that quarter, and to maintain the in-school deferment status on your existing loans. We recommend talking to your advisor or program director about your course plan for your degree.

Admissions

Program Start Dates

For the majority of our programs, quarters begin on the first Monday of January, April, July, and October each calendar year.

Non-Discrimination Policy

Pursuant to university Policies 1013 and 2001, the University of Western States admits students of any race, color, nationality, ethnic origin, sex, or age to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the university.

Visa Requirements

Student Visa/I-20 Documentation

International students, including Canadian students, must meet U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) guidelines in order to enter the United States under F-1 student status.

International students who have been offered acceptance into a UWS on-campus program will receive the I-20 forms from the UWS office of admissions. The I-20 is an official document required for all international students in order to apply for an F-1 student visa and to enter the United States. These forms need to be completed and returned to UWS via express, regular mail, or courier along with evidence of financial support equivalent to the cost of one academic year at UWS. This final cost includes tuition, books, fees, housing, and miscellaneous costs.

Proof of financial support may be demonstrated through a combination of any of the following:

Original bank statement or a letter on bank letterhead.
Original letter from a bank showing a line of credit.
Original scholarship award letter.
National government or provincial aid loan and grant award letters.
Original bank account statement of a parent or sponsor.*

* Students who show Proof of Funding through a parent or sponsor must include a completed parent or sponsor form with notarization along with their I-20 application.

Upon receipt of the completed I-20 forms, financial documentation, and full acceptance to the program, UWS will issue an I-20 for the student and mail it to their home address.

After the I-20 document is issued, all foreign students applying for F-1 status are required to pay a SEVIS fee of $350 USD and print the receipt. This fee is paid directly to the U.S. government, not UWS. Proof of payment is required before going to the U.S. consulate for a visa interview and is also required when crossing the border into the United States. Please note that Canadian citizens do not need to visit a consulate for an interview or to obtain a student visa.

USCIS regulations allow F-1 students to enter the United States with an issued I-20 document and SEVIS payment receipt within 30 days of the first day of classes.

All international students with valid F-1 student status are granted certain privileges and are subject to certain federal requirements and restrictions on activities. It is the student’s responsibility to understand these regulations and to maintain student status.
