Edith Cowan University

Introduction

Welcome to ECU

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Edith Cowan University.

At ECU we are guided by our values of integrity, respect, rational inquiry and personal excellence. Our focus on teaching and research is inspired by engagement and partnerships with those in the many communities we were established to serve.

Research at ECU extends knowledge and improves the quality of life for Australians and people across the globe. Our research priorities focus on solving real-world problems across social, economic, physical and environmental domains.

Established in 1991, ECU has grown rapidly into a quality university with excellent student satisfaction and internationally recognised research.

Students and graduates at ECU are amongst the best in the world, with many fulfilling crucial roles in our society. Their outstanding achievements have been recognised throughout Australia and internationally through awards, grants, scholarships and prizes.

ECU is committed to widening participation and breaking down barriers that restrict entry to education, and we are continuing our work on the enhancement and development of alternative entry pathways to higher education.

We are a university that values diversity and this is exemplified by our multicultural student cohort spanning a wide range of ages. We also support gender equality and ECU is advancing this commitment through our membership of the Athena SWAN Charter in Australia.

I encourage you to find out more about how ECU can help you reach your potential.

Strategic goals

Guided by our strategic goals, ECU is building on our reputation for excellence in teaching, developing the quality and volume of our research outputs and increasing international programs and collaborations.

The ECU Strategic Plan, 2017-2021 – World Ready plots a course to achieve these strategic goals and grow the University’s reputation for having world ready graduates and leading-edge research.

Purpose, Vision, Values

ECU is guided by its purpose, vision and values.

Purpose

To transform lives and enrich society through education and research.

Vision

To be recognised for our world ready graduates and leading-edge research.

Values

  • Integrity - Being honest, ethical and fair.
  • Respect - Considering the opinions and values of others.
  • Rational Inquiry - Motivated by evidence and reasoning.
  • Personal Excellence - Demonstrating the highest personal and professional standards.

Our approach

ECU has identified five strategic themes that guide our endeavours at all levels and are enduring statements of how we work. They act as continuing reminders of the ethos of the University, and the way we set ourselves apart from other universities. These strategic themes will influence our approach to the achievement of our strategic goals over the term of this Strategic Plan, so that growth and change build on the firm foundations of our current strategic position and past successes.

ECU has a much-envied reputation as a university that provides one of the best learning experiences for our students. This reputation for excellence in teaching has not been achieved by chance; it reflects the value that we place on our students and the way we interact with them. ECU is an outward-facing university that highly values its connections with a wide range of external organisations to deepen the impact of our work. We recognise that our reputation is built on the productive relationships we have with our students and with business, industry, the professions, governments, universities, communities and alumni; sharing knowledge for mutual benefit.

  • Theme 1 - Dedicated to our students.
  • Theme 2 - Connecting with our community and the world.
  • Theme 3 - Building strategic partnerships and collaborations.
  • Theme 4 - Fostering strong alumni relations.
  • Theme 5 - Promoting equality, diversity and social responsibility.

Commitment to Equality and Diversity

ECU values individual differences and diversity.

We’re proud of the wide cultural diversity of people who’ve chosen to study and work here, in a learning environment that includes both school leavers and mature age students.

ECU is committed to a welcoming and inclusive learning and working environment, offering a wide range of activities to support and advance equality. This includes ensuring people of all genders feel enabled, and are supported, to pursue careers in their chosen fields. We are striving to remove barriers to gender equity by making improvements to our practices and organisational culture, and in particular to attract and retain those who have chosen a pathway in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM).

ECU is proud to be one of 15 institutions in the country to have achieved Bronze Award status as participants in the first Pilot of the Athena SWAN Charter in Australia hosted by the Science in Australia Gender Equity initiative (SAGE). Originating in the UK, this initiative is an accreditation and improvement program for higher education and research organisations, successful in transforming gender equity action to improve the promotion and retention of women and gender diverse groups within STEMM.
