In May 2001, the Government of Ireland recommended that an Institute for American Studies should be established in Ireland. It also decided that it should be named for the 42nd President of the United State, President William Jefferson Clinton, in recognition of his role both personally, as well as those of the United States Government, Congress and people, in the Irish Peace Process. University College Dublin successfully tendered for the project and the Clinton Institute… [+] for American Studies was formally established at UCD. The success of the tender owed much to the enthusiastic support and imagination of Professor Maurice Brich of the School of History and Archives and Dr. Ron Callan of the School of English, Drama and Film Studies. Professor Bric was the first acting Director of the Institute and played a key role in laying foundations, such as the introduction of the Institute’s Masters programme in American Studies. In 2004, Professor Liam Kennedy was appointed Director, responsible for the Institute’s teaching, research and outreach programmes. He has overseen the expansion and diversification of core programmes and the internationalisation of our teaching and research. This has included the establishment of an international Summer School, of MA programmes – in Media and International Conflict and in American Politics and Foreign Policy – and of a PhD programme in American Studies. President Clinton has warmly supported the establishment of the Institute, paying several visits and addressing students in memorable lectures. Mission Through research, teaching and public engagement the UCD Clinton Institute promotes the advanced study of the United States and its global relations.

When he first introduced Acupuncture TCM to Ireland in the early 1980s, very few people had heard of Acupuncture, TCM or Chinese Herbal Medicine. Nowadays, many people actively choose Alternative Medicine either as an adjunct to Western Medical treatment or as a means of treating illnesses which have not responded well to other forms of medicine. Acupuncture and TCM are at the forefront of such Alternative approaches to health and illness, focusing as they do, not only on treating and curing current illness but also on disease prevention and health enhancement. Prof Shanahan has written a number of short articles on Acupuncture/TCM in all its facets, and we have now launched the first article in the series on this website. Qualified Practitioners of Acupuncture and TCM in Ireland Graduates of the ICTCM are automatically eligible for membership in the PRTCM, Professional Register of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Founded in 1983, the PRTCM is the first and oldest professional body representing and regulating the profession of Acupuncture and TCM in Ireland - including Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Medical Qigong. In class, students work on developing their productive and receptive skills while also increasing their accuracy and fluency. We have developed a Language Learning Pathway to provide all learners with a clear description of the objectives for each of our levels. Whether students are with us for 2 weeks,b 8 weeks or a year we’ll help them design a clear learning strategy based on their individual goals. Facilities & Services 25 classrooms Student cafe/restaurant Library Meditation room Computer lab Large student recreational area Social & Cultural Activities We believe that in order to get the most from their time in Ireland students should be exposed to English not just in the classroom but in a variety of environments and contexts. That’s why our social and cultural programme is so important to us and why we spend so much time and energy making sure that it is as varied, vibrant and interesting as possible. We have a dedicated social programme coordinator who organises activities, tours and visits throughout the year for our students. These activities are a scheduled part of almost all courses and normally occur after class in the afternoon and evening. We also organise day and weekend trips to scenic areas outside Dublin, such as Connemara, Clare and Galway. Accommodation Homestay Student residence Over the years we have built up strong relationships with a number of local families who host our students during their time in Ireland, all of whom are personally interviewed by our accommodation officer and are chosen for their experience and friendliness. We also have a number of self-catering residential options that are available on request. It is the most popular destination for Irish school-leavers and actively promotes university life as a journey of academic and personal discovery through its highly innovative and flexible UCD Horizons undergraduate curriculum. UCD is Ireland’s leader in postgraduate education with approximately 7,000 postgraduate students, representing approximately 28% of the UCD student population, and almost 2,000 PhD students. Over 50% of UCD undergraduates progress to postgraduate studies. The role of UCD within Irish higher education is underscored by the fact that UCD alone accounts for over 30% of international students, over 25% of all postgraduate students and almost 28% of all doctoral enrolments across the seven Irish universities. UCD by numbers UCD is the national leader in research funding, attracting quality investment that has helped the university to establish a reputation as a world-class destination for leading researchers. The university has established four major interdisciplinary research themes that match Ireland’s needs and current global challenges. UCD keeps an external focus, seeking to lead and shape agendas through alliances and partnerships with its peers, nationally and internationally. The international standing of UCD has increased rapidly in recent years and the university is currently ranked within the top 1% of institutions worldwide by the Times Higher Education rankings.
