University of Amsterdam

Introduction

The University of Amsterdam

A modern university with a city-centre campus, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) has a rich history and traces its roots back to 1632 when the Athenaeum Illustre was established to train students in trade and philosophy.

The UvA is an internationally oriented research university and consistently ranks among the best universities in Europe. The UvA seeks to provide an inspiring international academic environment in which both staff and students can develop their talents optimally. In addition to a broad range of English-taught Master’s programmes, the University offers a number of English-taught Bachelor’s programmes and more than 15 Summer School courses.

Heart of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the financial, cultural and creative centre of the Netherlands. It is home to many international and local businesses, organisations and institutes. English is widely spoken and understood in Amsterdam and the city centre is easy for international residents to access and navigate. Amsterdam is also ranked as one of the safest cities worldwide and the second safest city in Europe.

Rather than a secluded campus, the UvA has four integrated city campuses throughout Amsterdam. Classes are held in quaint, old buildings throughout the city centre or at the state-of-the-art facilities at Amsterdam Science Park.

Studying in an international environment

The UvA’s strong international orientation is reflected in the curricula of its various degree programmes. The large selection of English-taught programmes makes the UvA more accessible to international students than most other European universities. The UvA also has an extensive network of foreign partner universities, facilitating student and staff exchanges.

Research

The University of Amsterdam has an outstanding reputation for research and is ranked among the world’s best in many fields. Its diverse application-oriented research programmes are often multidisciplinary and focused on societal issues. The UvA community consists of independent thinkers who dare to question dogmas and openly challenge each other’s opinions.

Scholarships for international talent

The UvA has established several scholarship programmes specifically designed to offer talented and motivated non-EU/EEA students the opportunity to attend a Master’s programme at our institution: the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship, the Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship, the Holland Scholarship and the Amsterdam Science Talent Scholarship.
