The University of Groningen is a top 100 research university with a global outlook. We are currently ranked 80th in the Times Higher Education ranking and offer over 30 English-taught Bachelor's programmes and over 125 Master's programmes. Founded in 1614, the university is one of the oldest research universities in the Netherlands. We are a truly international university, with over 30,000 students and 6,000 international students from over 120 different nationalities.

The bachelor's programme International and European Law takes three years. The first year teaches all basic law fields and therefore has a broad character. Concepts of private law, constitutional law, and criminal law will be discussed. In the second year, these fields of law will be expanded more and will be dealt with more in-depth.

Besides that, European Union law and public international law will be discussed to a much larger extent. Research methods and training are also included in the second year. The third year ends your bachelor programme by writing a thesis on a law-related subject of your choice, which will be defended in front of supervisors and fellow students.... [-]

What role does the government play in digital society? And what impact does this have on the public sector? How should we approach issues of cybercrime from a legal and organizational perspective?

Recent advances in digitization have resulted in an increasing number of parties becoming involved in security issues. 'Security and digitization' is, after all, not restricted to cybercrime and thus affects both the police and courts of law. It is also concerned with issues of surveillance and the maintenance of law and order, including online as well as offline public order. Government agencies have to decide which strategies to adopt in order to deal with such obstacles and issues brought about by digitization. In the job market, there is a clear demand for graduates with an interdisciplinary profile capable of interpreting developments in digital society and responding to them accordingly. The energy sector is changing as a result of market liberalization and climate change concerns. The EU presents a typical example of this yet similar developments can be found in other parts of the world. Our specialized Energy and Climate Law programme will present the main principles of energy market liberalization and how climate law affects the energy sector. [+]

What did liberalization do for the energy sector? And did it change the relationship between the state and the energy industry? Should energy companies be concerned with climate change?

Today, the energy sector is changing as a result of market liberalization and climate change concerns. The EU presents a typical example of this scenario but similar developments can also be found in other parts of the world. This specialized programme will present the main principles of energy market liberalization and how climate law affects the energy sector, with the EU often used as a case example.

The programme is designed to equip its graduates for a career as an in-house lawyer in an energy company, but it is also suitable for those who are interested in a career working as an energy expert for major law firms. Are monopolies allowed within the EU? How can a German company protect itself against aid from the Dutch government to Philips? The European Economic Law program covers the central aspects of European Market Law, meaning that students learn about the many different types of law, including institutional law, labor law, tax law, and the European protection of human rights.

The programme consists of six courses encompassing a broad range of topics, including some with a more political science approach. In addition, you will attend a seminar and write a thesis. The language of instruction and examination is English.

While the emphasis of the programme is on European Economic Law, there is also an opportunity to include European Human Rights Law in your programme. Human rights are universal, yet are not recognized everywhere, nor interpreted the same in all countries. In some cases, this can leave victims and their lawyers in a situation where they must choose which forum to go to or which human rights legislative system to navigate in order to find their justice.

In this one year International Human Rights Law LLM programme, you will be trained in human rights at the international level, but also in international humanitarian law and other related fields.
